When social media was first invented,

It was introduced as a way to stay in touch with friends, make new ones, and connect around shared interests.

Then something happened.

Advertising dollars flew in and algorithms were put in place to tailor the kind of content we see,

and we became addicted to endless feeds of content mirroring our views.

Influencer culture arose,

we shifted from wanting connection online to wanting attention.

And we became the loneliest generation of all time.

We desperately need alternatives to the status quo.

The following are some of the north star beliefs that guide our perspective on social media at thewhite mirror:

1. Social media should be a tool for people to connect authentically with one another:

We want to see healthy spaces online for people to maintain and build relationships with one another.

ones that bring people together around common interests - whatever those may be.

2. Social media should be an avenue for people to express their individual creativity:

We love seeing platforms that allow creators to own their content and compensate them fairly for it.

3. The spread of misinformation on social media continues to be one of the biggest modern day threats:

We need more third-party tooling that integrates with social media platforms to help verify the truthfulness of claims.

4. Users should be in control of their data on social media apps:

They should get to decide what they feel comfortable sharing,

and there should be transparency in detailing how their data is used.

We consider social media to be any type of media that connects people online around a shared interest or for a shared purpose.

This is "the white mirror" — a media platform exploring social tech.
